Think back at a time when you were ‘in the zone’. Athletes often see the future and feel the centre of the earth. They are not insane. They are in the zone! It is almost a spiritual state of mind where anything is possible. It’s when you are the most productive, creative and feel powerful. You can do no wrong. There is a sense of clairvoyance, a super power, a rhythm, a flow and almost an orgasm to almost everything you do when you are in that state.

Psychologist Mihaly defies this experience “There is this focus, once it becomes intense leads to a sense of ecstasy, a sense of clarity: you know exactly what you want to do from one moment to the other. A sense of time disappears. You forget yourself. You feel part of something larger”.

Don’t we all love to be in this state all the time? So, how do we get to this state? It is very hard to explain. When you are there, you just know. But that answer is not good enough if we want to simulate ‘getting there’ at will or at the push of a button.

At Janaa Praana, our coaching is energy based and is premised on focussing, inspiring and regularly recharging ones energy to bring one’s best self to every relationship, discussion and situation. That is our coaching promise! The way a leader feels at any given moment profoundly influences how their team members feel and in turn how they perform. As a coach, it is our responsibility to bring out the best in our clients by harvesting and fuelling them with the right kind of energy that is intrinsic and from within.

Our energy levels affect every aspect of our lives from our emotional growth to our physical and spiritual development. Energy can be physical, rational, emotional, intellectual or spiritual. Some forms of energy are more enduring than others. So at the first level is Physical energy. Physical energy is critical for ones well-being. Everything begins with self-care. Consumption of energy takes place all the time. Sometimes the consumption of energy is low (during periods of rest) and at other times it is high (intense physical or mental activity). One feels tired or rejuvenated based on how one manages the ‘energy equation’. One’s physical energy can be restored through food, sleep and exercise. The problem with physical energy is that it loses its pop. This is not sustainable and needs constant restoration.

At the second level is rational energy. Rational energy is basically the anticipation of gain and avoidance of pain or fear. When one’s physical energy is depleted and the anticipation of gain (doing something to get that proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow) or the avoidance of pain (someone holding a virtual gun to your head to get something done …or else face the consequences) propels one to get something done even if they are physically depleted.

At the third level is Emotional energy. It is the aliveness of the mind and happiness of the heart and spirit filled with hope because you have a purpose larger than yourself. This can be equated to being in the zone. Millions of people are experiencing an emotional energy crisis. Every day people say “I am feeling tired, I feel older than I am, I wish I could get more done, I wish I had more energy that could fuel my inner drive to overcome setbacks in life”. Emotional energy empowers you to take on the challenges and persevere to live according to your values and purpose in life. Research has proven that emotional energy is four time more powerful than rational energy.

Coming back to our question – How does one get to this state and what are the sources of emotional energy? The sources are different from person to person. It’s what energizes and makes them vibrant. They can range from passion, prayer, purpose, affection, approbation, harmony, visualization, friendship and so on. Having something that fuels your passion for life will certainly boost ones emotional energy.

The trick is to identify these sources consciously and to fill your tank with it at will when they feel depleted and when you are in a de-energized zone. In the same breath, to also identify the energy leaks and energy deflators and plugging them. One needs to be aware of the toxic situations and toxic people in their lives and how to deal with them. Once you have filled your tank and plugged the leaks, you are ready to go and be in the zone or state of flow.

Dreams die when we lack the emotional energy to hang in there and be resilient in the face of obstacles. Everyone needs to find their own sources of renewable emotional energy and fill their tank with it. Very often when the client goes for coaching, they are in the zone -2 or zone -3. We establish in which zone the client is in and reinforce the idea that failure is not an option. It becomes an option only when the client gives up. The client is only postponing their success and with the help of a good coach, amazing results will be achieved.

Our coaching model listens to the clients concerns and challenges and uses an energy based technique to bring their best self to be in the zone.
